Chlorella

Chlorella is a single-cell green alga that thrives on freshwater. It is spherical in diameter and measures 3 to 8 micron and is without flagella. It is a plant with high photosynthesis efficiency, contains the green photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll-a and -b in its chloroplast and has a wide range of distribution. Through photosynthesis it multiplies rapidly requiring only carbon dioxide, water, sunlight, and a small amount of minerals to reproduce. The cells are rich in chlorophyll, protein, vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, and nucleic acid.

Applications and Health Benefits of Chlorella
Chlorella is considered a complete food, a superfood even, because of its important role in detoxification and its high content of protein, vitamins, and minerals including carotenoids (astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, flavoxanthin, loraxanthin, neoxanthin and violaxanthin), enzymes (pepsin) and chlorophyll.
• Naturally cultivated Chlorella is rich in protein, vitamin B12, beta carotene, and many other vitamins and minerals. It includes all eight essential amino acids, lipoic acid, and is rich in RNA & DNA.
• Chlorella is a rich source of magnesium due to the presence of a large amount of chlorophyll in the algae.
• Chlorella has more chlorophyll than any other plant in the world. Because of its high levels of chlorophyll, Chlorella has many beneficial effects on the immune system.
• The Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF) has intriguing regenerative effects.
• Chlorella stimulates peristalsis in the intestines and so it is one of the major diets followed in many weight-loss programs.
• Chlorella is sold as a dietary supplement and food colorant.

Mass production

World industrial reception of micro seaweed Chlorella biomass increases every year and is estimated in thousand tons. The high production efficiency (end-product accumulation) and a unique set of natural useful components have defined wide application of chlorella in various spheres activity of the person for a long time. Chlorella is applied in agriculture, medicine (pharmacy), in the food-processing industry, perfumery, sewage treatment etc.
Micro seaweed Chlorella is grown and in open cultivators (systems) as well as in closed cultivators. The technology of a micro seaweed biomass production differs with observance of special parameters (cleanliness, high quality of initial components). Now a day there is enough wide spectrums of photoreactors. It is technological equipment for industrial production of micro seaweed. Photoreactors are closed systems of transparent capacities (pipes) in which the nutrient medium with culture of micro seaweed is circulated. Passing the whole way a like a coil, suspension reaches in special memory tank where the next portion of СО2 is received which is during the further movement intervals equally distributed on all biomass. In nutrient medium nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, micro elements take part. In industrial production the light which is necessary for photosynthesis is provided with natural solar illumination. When the mass of weight Chlorella reaches a certain concentration, half of the volume with finished goods is merged (it occurs for time a day), the system is filled up with a fresh nutrient medium, and the cycle is repeated. The important detail is cleaning of the systems. As well as in the pool, micro seaweed can be besieged on the walls of pipes. In these cases special systems of cleaning (cleaning pistons) are applied. There is a simple and an effective decision: at the required moment a foam rubber ball the diameter of which is equal to the section of pipes is launched into the system. Moving ahead under the pressure like a coil, it clears everything that has been stuck to the walls, and after a while the system is again clean and transparent. The main advantage of closed glass piped reactors is the possibility of regulating the terms conditions of production of a micro seaweed biomass. It allows growing clean cultures that are to produce standard production. But the productivity of glass tubed photoreactors in certain cases is to 10 times above, than in pools.

 Industrial Uses of Chlorella
• Research studies have revealed that adding chlorella or CGF to foodstuffs, food manufacturers can significantly extend the shelf life of fermented food products without antiseptics.
• If chlorella extract is added to the dough before yeast fermentation the visual appearance and flavor of the loaf is enhanced.
• Chlorella can also be added to wine, cakes, cookies, cheese, ice cream, pasta and rice to enhance flavor and nutritive value.
